Have Games, Will Travel
In ME1 he was pretty much spineless. Yeah, he was “renegade”, but confronting him on it always made him nod in agreement with no rebuttal.
In ME2 they retconned the paragonning of Garrus and made him “renegade”, but they went too far. He’s dangerously reckless, arrogant, and impatient. The worst…I wouldn’t consider Garrus’s “renegade” behavior in ME2 unexpected/retconned. All he really did through ME1 was complain about bureaucracy and red tape, sure, so I guess he was bound to react somehow. He wasn’t a remarkable character in ME1 (I’m a hardcore Garrus fan and it sucks to admit that but it’s true lol. but I guess that’s what character development is for), however he did grow throughout it depending on what Shepard taught him through their discussions and her actions.
He’s a terrible leader…
He’s been noted to be a good leader, though, considering that he’s managed to unite 3 rival gangs to bring him down, and even the Shadow Broker praises his abilities, so Garrus must be doing something right. You hear gang leaders and members noting how Garrus has managed to screw up various operations. It’s not easy to do something like that. It takes tact to strategize a way to “get under their skin” the way he did.
… like the only reason the station isn’t a haven was because of Sidonis…
I feel like that statement is watering the situation down a lot. Garrus realizes that what he did didn’t even put a “dent” on Omega, but he never pinned that on Sidonis - at least that I remember. He blames his emotions (“My feelings got in the way of my better judgement” or something) and Sidonis for the death of his men, and ffff yeah he’s bitter about it, but that’s about it.
Then throw into consideration the fact that he’s entirely ignoring his dying mother and the rest of his family just so he can go off and feed his own ego playing space cowboy and griping about C-Sec’s red tape.
He should communicate with his family more, definitely. It’s not fair to them, but he has to help Shepard fight the Reapers. I would do the same in his shoes.
It’s like:
Stay home with family < Fight the things that will wipe out all life in the galaxy
As I recall, he offered to send money for treatments so it’s not like he’s avoiding them completely. And he donated money to research for his mom’s condition. Again, he needs to talk to them more because judging by the chat logs he passes off as the unreliable disappointment, which is sad. He’s ashamed by his failures to even show his face on cam ‘cuz of his scars. Garrus y u no talk about ur feelings brah.
Yeah, Garrus has flaws, like any other character (except for Varric lol). Is Garrus impulsive? Oh, yeah. Is he too idealistic? Fo sho. Does he still have a lot to learn? Of course. Everyone does. But he still has a good heart underneath it all and is extremely loyal. He wants to help those who can’t defend themselves, he just needs more self-control to be more effective at it.
Just my 2 cents. :3
